EXTRA

2020-2021 AYSO EXTRA PROGRAM in Region 214

AYSO EXTRA, a COMPETITIVE PROGRESSIVE PLAYER PROGRAM, is designed for players who have the interest, skills, abilities and commitment to enhance their experience and individual growth through soccer while retaining the spirit of AYSO. EXTRA is not designed to overshadow the standard primary program – rather the goal is to strengthen AYSO by recruiting and retaining players and volunteers through providing more competitive play the AYSO way – all EXTRA programs embrace the Six Philosophies of AYSO. Additional information on the AYSO EXTRA program can be found at AYSO.org and at AYSO Section 1 West.

Program Details and Player Requirements

This year's EXTRA program will run from August '20 - Feb '21, and includes pre-season training, a regular season, competitive league playoffs and post-season tournaments. During the season, teams will participate in a minimum of two practice sessions a week on Region 214 fields: usually one coach led and one led by a dedicated EXTRA trainer. Games will be played on Saturdays and/or Sundays throughout AYSO Section 1, with approximately half of the games on Region 214 fields and the remainder throughout AYSO Section 1 (primarily Los Angeles County). All players are guaranteed to play 50% of each game in regular season EXTRA play.

Due to the competitive nature of the EXTRA program, EXTRA players are NOT eligible for the regular fall season ("Core Program") or All-Stars, but can choose to participate in Spring and/or Tournaments. In Addition, players may NOT be on an AYSO Region 214 EXTRA roster and a soccer club roster simultaneously.

Region 214 will be fielding AYSO EXTRA teams in the following divisions:

Division* Number of Players on the Field Number of Players on the Roster (max) Coach Certification  Referee Certification**
10U 7 10 U10 working toward U12 Basic working toward
Intermediate
11U-12U 9 12 U12 working toward Intermediate Basic or Intermediate Candidate
13U-14U 11 15 Intermediate and/or Advanced Intermediate and/or Advanced

* Tryouts in Divisions where there are not enough qualified players or appropriately trained volunteers may be cancelled.

** Referees must be at this level or actively working to obtain this level (must have attended the course and passed the physical and law exams).

Team and Parent Volunteer Requirements

To be a fully formed and fully functioning AYSO Region 214 EXTRA Team, the team volunteer list must consist of:

  • One Coach with the appropriate certifications for the age group as described above.
  • One Assistant Coach with the appropriate certifications for the age group as described above.
  • Three Referees (minimum) with the appropriate certifications for the age group as described above. Each Referee commits to refereeing 12 games during the Fall Season (beyond Tournaments and EXTRA requirements for the team) and upgrading their skills and their badge.
  • One Team Manager
  • One Tournament Team Manager
  • One parent of every child will perform 20 hours of volunteer duty for the region. The duties below will not be overlapping (e.g., the Coach can not also be the Tournament Team Manager)

With EXTRA play comes EXTRA Responsibility...
Every EXTRA family is
REQUIRED to participate in a significant region wide volunteer position to support the Region and/or the EXTRA Program. The EXTRA responsibility must be approved by the EXTRA Volunteer Coordinator.

Player Selection

Players are selected for Region 214’s EXTRA Program based on feedback from impartial evaluators at standardized tryouts.  Full participation in at least one tryout session is a requirement for selection, although attendance at multiple tryouts can be to a player's advantage. Players must also:
  • Register for the upcoming AYSO 214 Fall Season through regular registration
  • Register for the AYSO EXTRA Tryout program. Make sure to pay the $0 tryout fee and checkout.
  • Upload a current player head shot (full face, no sunglasses or hats) in the player's account.
  • Player must bring the completed Player Registration forms for BOTH the Fall Season and the EXTRA program to the tryouts.
  • Players will not be allowed to participate in tryouts until both these registrations are completed.

There are 3 fees required to participate in the EXTRA program:
   1) AYSO National Membership Fee $20
   2) AYSO Region 214 Fall Registration fee at the current rate
   3) AYSO Region 214 EXTRA fee of $550 which will be paid completely by June 1st. This will include:
